Where Did Baptist First Begin?

Our denomination spans as far back as the first settlers that came to America. Embarking for a new world, members traveled aboard the Mayflower in 1620, and when they arrived on the shores of what would be Plymouth, they gathered together to find freedom in religious liberty that had not been there under a previous king. The first Baptist church started under John Smyth, who brought controversy to the denomination by baptizing himself. Due to this, a separate group began under Thomas Helwys as the General Baptists, who believed in general atonement and regenerate church membership.

Who Are Baptists?

Baptists main difference in their doctrinal beliefs is the desire for those who come to faith, to make a proclamation, or public expression of their transformation in Christ. Once a believer has put their faith in Jesus, turned and repented from sin, then the public expression of that is through baptism; the washing of the body with water. Baptist believe that those who have made such a profession should be baptized fully immersed in water, and that this baptism welcomes you into the fold of God’s people, whereby we can call one another brothers and sisters in Christ. This then leads to becoming a member of the local church body where a believer made such a profession of faith.

What Can I Expect Coming to FBCY?

Expect to worship, worship, and worship! Not just in song, but in every aspect of our service. All we do is for the Glory of God and to the praise and exaltation of the Father. Thus, come with an expectant heart to participate in worshiping God as part of the body of Christ.

What Should My Attire Be?

We care about the attitude of your heart when attending, and our hope is that as you step into our church, you’re either seeking to know our Lord better, or desiring to step into a relationship with Him for the first time. What you wear doesn’t determine this. Please feel free to come through our doors in what makes you comfortable, BUT also showing respect and dignity for others who worship with us as well.

You can expect to see some who cherish dressing more formally, leaving their jeans at home in exchange for slacks, khakis, and a button up shirt. You might find some who keep the comfort of jeans but throw on a nice polo. Everyone has a different style, but we all have one Lord, so we encourage you to come dressed so that your focus and attention is on the Risen Savior.

Why FBCY?

Great question, and we admit that you could go to any other church, as there are many great groups of believers doing amazing things for the Lord. We encourage you to seek out a place that God has called you to, and where you can be welcomed, and find a place to serve the Kingdom. We hope and pray that if you decide that FBCY is that place, that you find us welcoming, sound in doctrine, genuine in our walk, but most of all, preaching and proclaiming the Gospel of Christ Jesus.
